Eyedaptic has announced the unveiling of its new smart glasses, called EYE6, that utilise AI to visually assist those with age-related macular degeneration and other retinal disorders that cause vision loss.
EYE6, which is set to be introduced at the American Retina Forum National Meeting on 7 August, brings the AI technology together with Eyedaptic’s interactive visual assistant called Ivy.
Jay Cormier, CEO and founder of Eyedaptic, said: "Our commitment to innovation is evident in Ivy’s development, combining state-of-the-art machine learning with user-centric design that redefines how individuals with visual impairments interact with their surroundings.”
Cormier added: “As we continue to push boundaries in visual assistive technology, The EYE6 with Ivy represents a culmination of our team’s dedication and expertise, and we are excited to introduce this advanced, wearable vision aid to eye care specialists and their patients.”
The glasses provide this service using GenAI technology and large language models, allowing it to visualise and interpret real-time information for its users. The Ivy assistant is then able to read text, describe a room, locate objects, and assist its users in daily tasks, providing output in 99 languages and adapting to different environments.
Mitul Mehta, MD and Chief Medical Officer of Eyedaptic, said: “The implementation and integration of AI in visual assistive devices is truly groundbreaking. With the EYE6, individuals with vision impairments now have a visual assistant to help them do everyday tasks and activities that weren’t possible before. They can ask Ivy to read a page to them or describe a room. With Ivy, the possibilities are endless allowing individuals to remain independent and have a better quality of life.”
EYE6 succeeds EYE5, which is equipped with AutoZoom Mode for viewing text, facial detection, contrast enhancement controls, and a 2-in-1 wearable and handheld magnifier.
The EYE5 glasses are also equipped with EyeSwitch – a technology which optimises the user’s functional peripheral vision. Additionally, EYE5 can be upgradeable to EYE6, adding on the benefits of Ivy. EYE5 also includes the same vision enhancing features as the EYE6, with full high-definition 1080p resolution micro displays.
Reflecting on the unveiling of the technology, which is currently available for eye care practices and Eyedaptic users, Hemang Pandya, MD, founder of the American Retina Forum, concluded: “We are pleased to host the unveiling of this newest GenAI technology for the visually impaired.”
