The Arizona-based image sensor technology firm, onsemi, has successfully purchased SWIR Vision Systems, providers of colloidal quantum-dot-based (CQD) short wave infrared technology.
SWIR Vision Systems’ CQD technology extends the visibility and detection of systems beyond the range of standard CMOS sensors into short-wave infrared (SWIR) wavelengths.
SWIR technology has traditionally been limited because of high costs and the manufacturing complexity associated with the traditional indium gallium arsenide process. Now, the acquisition means SWIR Vision Systems is a wholly owned subsidiary of onsemi. As a result, SWIR Vision Systems’ team is being integrated into onsemi’s Intelligent Sensing Group.
Through the addition of new technologies into its portfolio, onsemi is hoping to bring its CMOS sensor together with SWIR Vision Systems’ innovations to enhance the company’s intelligent sensing product portfolio.
The move also means onsemi will combine its silicon-based CMOS sensors and manufacturing expertise with SWIR Vision Systems’ CQD technology. In doing so, they will aim to produce highly integrated SWIR sensors at a lower cost and higher volume.
It is believed the deal will see the development of more compact, cost-effective imaging systems. These will offer extended spectrum coverage, which will be applicable in a wide array of commercial, industrial and defense applications.
